The presentation offers an insight into advanced digital technologies and their broader application in oral and maxillofacial surgery. This leads to a discussion regarding the applications of these technologies in the management of obstructive sleep apnoea, specifically, maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) with counter clockwise rotation. Finally, the criteria for appropriate patient selection for consideration for the surgery is developed.

Objectives:

1. Explain how digital technologies are employed in oral and maxillofacial reconstruction
2. Demonstrate how similar technology is employed in planning and executing orthognathic procedures, especially MMA
3. Identify patients who are most likely to benefit from maxillomandibular advancement surgery

Dr David Leinkram

Dr David Leinkram is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon who completed his Dentistry degree in Melbourne and Medical degree in Sydney. After working as a Junior Medical Officer at the Prince of Wales Hospital, David completed his surgical training at Westmead and John Hunter Hospitals. He was awarded his specialist fellowship in 2012. The following year, David was appointed as a Visiting Medical Officer at Westmead Hospital and commenced private practice in Bondi Junction. In his work David developed a keen interested in the highly specialised field of microvascular head and neck reconstructive procedures following tissue loss from trauma or tumour ablation. To develop these skills, he travelled to China for much of 2015 and continued his training at Liverpool Hospital (in Sydney) in 2016 and 2017. David was appointed as a Visiting Medical Officer at The Chris O’Brien Lifehouse in 2018. He works collaboratively to reconstruct patients with an emphasis on function and aesthetics. When possible, dental implants supporting fixed or removable prostheses are incorporated in the reconstruction. This work employs advanced digital technologies that facilitates accurate and predictable results. David employs similar technology to perform complex orthognathic procedures with great precision and predictability. David’s fascinating surgical journey has been shared with his wife Shlomit who he married when they were both second year dentistry students. They are the proud parents of seven beautiful children who keep them on their toes!
